Standing Together for Oregon

Why I’m Running

These are hard times for Oregon families—and they call for leadership, not retreat.

Priorities for the next four years

Standing Together Against a Dangerous White House

The White House seems determined to bring militant chaos to our streets, to make it as hard as possible for vulnerable Oregonians to access health care and put enough food on their tables, to keep our schools from talking about ideas they don’t like.

Whether in the halls of the Capitol or on the street alongside others who want to see us back on the right track, we have to stand up.

Standing Together for Oregon Families Facing the Rising Cost of Living

Families who are working hard are being pushed closer to the edge by rising costs they can’t control. Relief is possible, but we have a lot more to do.

In the past two sessions, through my work on the Energy and Environment Committee and as Chair of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Wildfire, I’ve focused on two major household costs:

  • Utility bills: There are practical ways to stop ongoing double-digit rate increases.

  • Homeowners insurance: Anyone who takes reasonable steps to reduce wildfire risk should be able to find adequate, affordable coverage.

Progress has been encouraging, but we have a lot more to do. Another area needing work is:

  • Income taxes: Oregon applies nearly the highest tax rate to wage-earners close to the poverty level. We can change that.

Standing Together to Reduce the Number of Families Struggling to Get By

Our current job-creation efforts leave too many people behind. It’s time to shift focus from handing out favors to wealthy corporations that play different states against each other in favor of proven strategies like:

  • Investing consistently in community colleges and well-designed workforce training programs. Research shows that responsible companies are looking for a skilled, ready-to-go workforce as much as they are tax giveaways.

  • Supporting clean energy jobs. The assault on the clean energy industry is making life harder for working Oregonians. No other sector has brought more good jobs to rural Oregon in recent years. More are within reach, and there are smart ways to encourage them.

Standing Together to Meet Oregon’s Fiercest Ongoing Threat: Wildfire

Wildfire threatens lives, homes, health, and the long-term affordability of living in Oregon. Without sustained action, disasters will only grow more destructive—and more costly.

We have to act across prevention, response, and recovery:

  • Fully support our fire service’s world-class work in early detection and rapid suppression

  • Continue building public clean-air spaces and expanding home filtration to be ready for the worst smoke episodes to come

  • Reduce catastrophic losses through ongoing investments in proven prevention programs

  • Insist that insurance carriers reward homeowners’ risk-reduction efforts with affordable policy premiums

Standing Together Against the Special Interests That Have Run the Show in Salem

Too often, political decisions are shaped by special interest with money and access—not by the people who live with the consequences.

I’ve chosen a different approach.

  • I used no funding from any Political Action Committees (PACs)—none from corporations, none from unions, none from insider lobbyists pushing their agendas—in my two successful Senate races (2018 and 2022). That’s made it easier to stand up.

  • In the 2018 campaign, other than $500 from the Jackson County Democrats, we sent all PAC checks back uncashed to their donors.

  • In the 2022 campaign, we deposited every PAC check and immediately sent a check for the identical amount to a nonprofit community organization.

Ways to Support the Campaign

This campaign runs on people power. We're grateful for your time and support.

Volunteer

Only one thing lets me hold this seat without special-interest money: the commitment of individual citizens—not PACs— who want to help shape Oregon’s future.
